LECTURE: Matrix Macromolecules, Gliosis, Mesial Sclerosis and Memory Impairments in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) caused by hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the most common cause of drug-resistant epilepsy in adults leading to surgical treatment.
Histologic evaluation of the sclerotic hippocampus reveals neuron loss, gliosis, and changes in molecules associated with water homeostasis, such as aquaporin (AQP4) and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteoglycans.
In his lecture, João Pereira Leite will discuss the molecular, histologial and behavioral alterations, such as the presence of episodic memory impairment in adults and children with TLE.
