LECTURE: Deep Brain Stimulation in Epilepsy: Actively Probing Neural Networks.
The desire to find alternative treatments for epilepsy has led to a resurgence of interest in the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS), which has been used quite successfully in movement disorders. Because of the diversity of regions involved with seizure initiation and propagation, a variety of targets for stimulation has been examined.
In this context, Marcio F.D. Moraes will discuss about local electrical and neurochemical alterations produced by specific protocols of DBS, as applied to current stimulation models in epilepsy. If successful they will enable future technologies with translational value, even nanotechnologies to flourish in the developing field of therapeutic neuromodulation.
